Leinenkugel's Big Butt DopplebockRating: 4 out of 5Ahhhh.. the legend of the Northwoods, one of the finest brewery's in all America. A midwestern favorite, and for good reason. They make some damn fine beers. Like the seasonal brew Big Butt Dopplebock, it is a double bock in the old world German style. It has rich delicious malts, and fine malts for just the right seasoning. Anyone who knows me knows that I am a sucker for a fine Irish red head and dark German bocks. I love them. I can enjoy other beers but those two will always have my heart. Well, to begin with Leinie's Big Butt is funny as hell for the name. Then when you crack one open, you know it was made for the beer drinker, not for pansy wannabes who have no clue about beer. It has a firm taste, not one of the strongest, but it is definitely more than Bud Light or Miller's misspelled Lite. It makes it all the better when it is a rich smooth taste. It's similar in its rich and smoothness to the Amber Bock that that Michelob offers, but definitely has a bit more refined bockishness. It is a seasonal brew, and that is a good thing, it really isn't a hot summer day after mowing the lawn kind of beer, it is a warm soothing beer, more suited for after shoveling the snow. The hops are complimentary to the malts, which I find to be the best feature of a good bock, too many brewers try to get ultra fancy with both the hops and the malts. If you're making a malt based brew like a bock, it is best to let the malts do the talking instead of the hops. This is a great beer that drinks well, tastes great, and makes you feel good. If you're a frat-boy looking to impress the ladies with something other than Bud give this a shot, you'll like it. If you're a beer drinker that likes fine brews, this is still a great choice. Drink Big Butt, and be merry! |
