The swine flu is a great thing! I love it, I can't get enough of it. I wish that there was a 24 hour news network that focused solely on the swine flu. I'm going to continue to call it the swine flu, the government can go pork itself, calling it H1N1 to reduce the confusion of complete idiots who think that eating pig is equivalent to making out with a sick pig.
This epidemic has gotten out of control, just like
SARS did, and the West Nile Virus, and the Avian Flu. Not that these diseases ever became an epidemic, but the media latched onto these dumbassed disease of the months every time they popped up. Here's why we are being subjected to this crap: the flu season is winding down, and doctors and hospitals need to buy new things, so they need to drum up some business. All they need is for the CDC to tell the media and make it sound dangerous. It works every single time. The media jumps on it and tries to get the public to panic, and there's always a small percentage of the populace that obliges.
First, let me clue you into a little bit of a secret that they are keeping from you regarding the Swine Flu. The regular flu virus kills 120 people per week in the United States of America during the flu season. The flu season varies in length each year, but it is typically a 4 month term, that's 16 weeks. How many deaths total is that? 120 x 16 = 1,920. So we have 1 death from the Swine Flu so far, I'm thinking that there is a higher risk of dying from the regular flu right now. Furthermore, we have a higher risk of death from lightning. More people have died from lightning strikes this year than Swine Flu.
Second, Swine Flu seems to be the weakest form of the flu I have ever heard of, at least this strain seems to be. Every description of the symptoms uses the terms mild and moderate, but never severe. The only difference from the regular flu is that there is more vomiting. Wow. So it's like having the flu, with a hint of food poisoning. Speaking of food poisoning, wasn't the peanut
e-coli scare more deadly than this outbreak of Swince Flu? Yep, so was the tomato scare last year. The Swine Flu isn't going to kill you. Or me. Or your brother. Deal with the fact that like in all cases you need to keep an eye on your very small children and old folks.
The facts all point too this being an attempt by the medical community drumming up business, and the media drumming up ratings. I don't want to diminish the loss of the family that lost their child, it truly is terrible and unfair. But the fact remains that on the whole there is little to no risk to general public of a true epidemic occuring, and people need to view the media with a skeptical eye, all of the time but especially at this time when the media is trying to conjure a pandemic of proportions like the 1918 Spanish Flu (which ironically was an actually dangerous strain of Swine Flu). Pandemics are far less likely these days, with modern medicine increasing the chance of survival and quarantine. The advantages we have now compared to 1918 in the medical field far outweigh the additional risks presented by ultra-fast spreading provided by air travel.
